Losec belongs to a form of drugs known as PPIs or proton pump inhibitors, which are responsible for decreasing the amount of acid produced in the stomach.

Losec is used to reduce the production of acid inside the stomach and get relief from GORD symptoms such as acid reflux, heartburn, stomach ulcers, etc.

The Losec drug, being a PPI (proton pump inhibitor) helps reduce the level of acid produced inside the stomach. The role of PPI is to block processes that take place in the cell walls of the stomach and thus ensure lesser production of acid. As result, it helps control ulcers, acid reflux, or hyperacidity.

Losec helps reduce acid production inside the stomach and thus reduce the symptoms of GORD such as:

  • Acid reflux

  • Indigestion or heartburn

  • Hyperacidity

  • Stomach ulcers, and more.

For an adult, the usual dose of Losec is 20 mg a day. However, depending on the condition you are being treated for and the severity of that condition, we may prescribe a dose ranging from 10 mg to 40 mg a day.

Take Losec daily in the morning before meals with half a glass of water. Swallow the whole capsule, do not chew, or crush it. If you or a child has trouble swallowing the whole capsule, open the capsule and empty its contents in half a glass of water. Instead of water, you may also use acidic fruit juice such as orange juice or apple sauce. Stir the mixture and drink it. Rinse the glass again with half a glass of water and drink that too to avoid medicine remnants. Do not chew any of the solid pieces.

If you forget to take your medicine in the morning, take it as soon as you remember. But if there is very little gap remaining from the next dose, then skip the missed dose and proceed with the next one.

It is essential that you do not stop taking the medicine without your doctor’s advice.

Do not use Losec if:

  • You are allergic to PPI (proton pump inhibitor) medicines .

  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients used in this medicine.

  • You are taking nelfinavir, anti-HIV medicine.

Common side effects of the medicine may include:

  • Gas

  • Headache

  • Nausea

  • Stomach pain

  • Flatulence

  • Diarrhoea

If you get a skin rash while taking Losec, especially in areas exposed to the sun, then you may need to stop taking this medicine.

If you need to take this medicine during pregnancy or while you are breastfeeding, please contact us to discuss further
