To make it easier for COPD patients to breathe with bronchospasm, doctors prescribe Atrovent, a bronchodilator. It induces muscle relaxation in the airways. It is crucial to adhere to the prescription precisely and limit the inhalations to 12 every 24 hours.

Atrovent is an inhaler that is used to relax the muscles in the airways and improve airflow into the lungs. It belongs to the class of medicines known as anticholinergic bronchodilators. Atrovent helps treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD, chronic bronchitis, emphysema and asthma.

Atrovent does not start working immediately like reliever inhalers. It starts showing effect 30 to 60 minutes after using the inhaler and this effect lasts for about three to six hours.

Atrovent HFA (inhaler) and Atrovent UDV which is used in nebulizers, both contain the active ingredient ipratropium bromide. This medicine opens up the airways in the lungs and makes it easier to breathe. However, this medicine is not to be used when you need immediate relief in case of shortness of breath or wheezing. In that case, you must use a quick-relief inhaler.

Atrovent is effective for bronchospasm which is caused due to COPD, asthma or bronchitis. It helps treat narrowed airways effectively and relaxes the muscles to help the easier flow of air.

Atrovent HFA is usually used three to four times a day. You may have to use one or two puffs. The dosage will be recommended to you by the doctor depending on your medical condition. It is important that you stick to this dosage stringently and do not make any alternations as per your convenience.

When you start using the Atrovent inhaler follow the below mentioned steps.

  1. Step 1: For the first three days of your usage, you will need to prime the inhaler. To do so, point the spray in the direction opposite to your face in order to prevent the medication from entering your eyes.

  1. Step 2: The medication has to be inhaled directly into the mouth. It can result in pain or irritation in your eyes if it enters the eyes. To avoid this, keep the mouthpiece inside your mouth and clasp your lips tightly around it. Close your eyes when using the inhaler.

  1. Step 3: If you have been asked to take two puffs during one dose, wait for at least a minute between the two puffs.

  1. Step 4: After you take the medicine, rinse your mouth with water in order to prevent irritation inside the throat or a dry mouth.

  1. Step 5: Clean your inhaler mouthpiece once every week with water. And allow it to air-dry completely before you start using it again.

It is best to use the inhaler every day at the same time. this will help you remember the dose and maintain equal intervals between the doses.
