Montelukast are tablets prescribed to treat asthma. They help prevent the onset of asthma attacks, breathlessness, and wheezing. Montelukast is a long term treatment that prevents narrowing the airways during exercise and offers relief from allergic rhinitis in asthma patients.

Montelukast is usually recommended when other treatments for asthma, such as corticosteroid inhalers and reliever inhalers, have proven inadequate. This medicine is an additional therapy for such patients. Montelukast is a long-term therapy to prevent asthma attacks and not a quick-relief remedy. It should not be relied upon in the event of an asthma attack.

Montelukast is a very effective medication for the treatment of asthma. It prevents the onset of asthma attacks, breathlessness and wheeziness – even in cases wherein regular use of corticosteroid inhalers is proving inadequate.

This medication is an add-on therapy that prevents the narrowing of airways during exercise and seasonal or year-round allergies. Montelukast can be used to treat asthma in patients as young as two years old. It is also effective to treat the problem of allergic rhinitis in people who have asthma.

Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist medication. When our brain detects the presence of allergens like pollen, pet hair, or dust mites, it releases a natural chemical known as leukotriene. Leukotriene triggers allergic reactions in our respiratory system, causing inflammation in the lungs and airways, excessive production of mucus, and tightening of muscles.

Montelukast works by blocking the receptors of leukotriene in your brain to treat perennial and seasonal allergies. It is an effective add-on medication for treating allergic rhinitis in asthma patients. Montelukast is also effective in preventing exercise-induced bronchoconstriction. Usually, Montelukast is prescribed only in cases where other treatments have failed.

Montelukast is a prescription-only medication and should be taken as per the dosage prescribed by your doctor. Your doctor will consider your age, medical history, the severity of your asthma, and response to treatment before prescribing the required dose for you. Montelukast is available in the form of oral tablets of strength 10mg. And in the form of chewable tablets, of strengths 4mg and 5mg. Here is the usually recommended dosage for Montelukast –

  • Children (Ages 0 to 6 months): It is yet to be determined if the use of Montelukast is safe and effective to treat allergic rhinitis in children less than six months old

  • Senior Citizens (Ages 65 years and older)Montelukast should be prescribed to this age group with caution. In senior citizens, the kidneys may not work as well as they used to. NOTE: Take only one dose of Montelukast tablets even if you have both allergic rhinitis and asthma. If you are already taking a dose of Montelukast for allergic rhinitis and asthma, then do not take an extra dose for exercise-induced bronchoconstriction.
