Zolmitriptan

Zolmitriptan is a strong medication used to treat acute migraine headaches and reduce the associated pain. This is a headache medicine that is only effective for existing migraine headaches. Zolmitriptan, unfortunately, cannot prevent migraine attacks or minimise the frequency of future migraine headaches. The medicine is not effective as a prophylactic to be taken in the absence of active migraine symptoms to prevent headaches. MedsNow does offer alternative treatments for migraine prophylaxis if this is needed.

Zolmitriptan belongs to a class of medicines called selective serotonin receptor agonists or triptans. Triptans work by narrowing the blood vessels in and around the brain which help in pain relief from migraine headaches. Triptans help in relieving migraine headaches but cannot be used to prevent migraine attacks or minimise the frequency of headaches.

Zolmitriptan is very effective in offering relief from symptoms of a migraine headache. It can do so even from a single dose and thus minimising the pain and discomfort caused as result.

Triptans help in relieving migraine headaches but cannot be used to prevent migraine attacks or minimise the frequency of headaches.

Zolmitriptan is extremely effective in offering relief to symptoms of migraine within 15 minutes of taking it, and one dose can last approximately 2 hours. The orodispersible Zolmitriptan tablets may provide more rapid relief than the normal oral tablets as they absorb more rapidly into the blood.

You can take one  Zolmitriptan 2.5mg or 5mg tablet at the onset of a migraine headache. You can take it before or after a meal, and you need to take it with water. If you do not feel relief from one dose, you can take a further dose but you need to wait at least 2 hours between doses. You can take a maximum of 10mg of Zolmitriptan in 24 hours.

Zolmitriptan is a safe medicine for people suffering from migraine headaches. But some medicines might not be suitable for people with certain conditions, and sometimes a few people need to exercise extra caution. You should make your doctor aware of these factors before you start taking Zolmitriptan tablets:

  • You are under 18 years old or above 65.

  • if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

  • If you have had a heart attack or any other heart condition.

  • If you have high blood pressure.

  • If you smoke or have suffered from alcoholism.

  • If you have peripheral arterial disease, which causes circulation problems in the body.

  • If you have had a stroke or a transient ischaemic attack.

  • If you have any liver or kidney problems.

  • If you are allergic to any medicine or if you are taking any other medicine.

Zolmitriptan might cause side effects in a few people. These side effects are short-lived, but it is best to call your doctor if you experience them for a long time:

  • Feeling nauseated

  • Feeling dizzy, unsteady on your feet or tired

  • Getting chills, or hot flashes

Zolmitriptan and Sumatriptan are both triptan medicines that have similar ways of working in the body and offering relief from migraine headaches. But clinical studies have demonstrated that Zolmitriptan is slightly more effective for those who experience migraines that are linked with menstruation.

Zolmitriptan is also available in the form of an orodispersible tablet that can be left to dissolve on the tongue which can be useful for people who have difficulty swallowing tablets or feel nauseous during migraine attacks.

You need to store Zolmitriptan in a cool, dry place that is away from direct heat and light. Keep this medicine out of reach of children.

You can buy Zolmitriptan tablets online from MedsNow. The medicines are delivered conveniently to your doorstep.

Is Zolmitriptan safe to take if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
We do not recommend the use of Zolmitriptan whilst pregnant or breastfeeding.

Can I use Zolmitriptan for headaches other than migraines?
No, you cannot use Zolmitriptan to treat a common tension headache or any other form of headache. Triptan medicines are specifically designed to treat migraine headaches. This is because they affect the serotonin receptors in the brain that cause migraine headaches.

How long does it take Zolmitriptan take to work?
Zolmitriptan will start showing effect within 45 minutes of taking the first dose for your migraine headache and it will last for about 2 hours.

How does Zolmitriptan make you feel?
Zolmitriptan alleviates symptoms of a migraine headache. But you might also experience problems like dizziness, nausea and a slight constriction in your chest and jaw. These side effects are rare and generally, go away in a few minutes.

Is Zolmitriptan a narcotic?
No, Zolmitriptan is not a narcotic. Narcotics are used for pain relief and are opioid-based. An example of an opioid-based pain reliever is morphine. Zolmitriptan is a triptan medicine that is also called a serotonin receptor agonist. They work by narrowing blood vessels in the head and stopping pain signals from being sent to the brain and hence offer relief from migraine headaches.

Is Zolmitriptan a painkiller?
Zolmitriptan is not a painkiller. It is a selective serotonin receptor agonist, and pain relief is a secondary effect.

Can I take ibuprofen with Zolmitriptan?
Yes, you can use painkillers like aspirin, paracetamol, or ibuprofen with Zolmitriptan if the first dose does not alleviate symptoms of your migraine headache.
