Almotriptan belongs to 5HT1-receptor agonists – a class of medicines referred to as triptans. Triptans work by stimulating serotonin receptors in the brain (a naturally occurring substance), which eases severe migraine painsHowever, Almotriptan is only highly effective if taken once the migraine attack starts instead of taking it before its onset.

Almotriptan is used to treat acute migraine symptoms, such as severe headaches accompanied by restlessness, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound, in teenagers and adultsIt is prescribed to migraine patients whose symptoms are not relieved with aspirin, acetaminophen, or any other pain reliever.

Note: Almotriptan treats migraine symptoms but does not prevent them.

Almotriptan tablets stop pain signals from being sent to the brain, thereby treating the symptoms. It narrows blood vessels and restricts the release of naturally occurring substances around the brain that are responsible for migraine symptoms.

Take an Almotriptan tablet at the first sign of a headache due to migraine. You may take a second tablet after two hours of the first dose if the symptoms persist or return. However, it is best to check with your doctor how many doses you can take in a day.

Your doctor may suggest Almotriptan 6.25 mg or Almotriptan 12.5 mg based on the severity. The recommended dosage is one tablet of Almotriptan 12.5 mg in 24 hours. The dose may be repeated after two hours if the symptoms persist, but should not exceed 25 mg in a day.
