Maxalt Melt is a drug used to treat the symptoms of migraines. It contains the active ingredient rizatriptan which is a 5HT1 agonist’ and belongs to the group of medicines known as triptans. This medicine helps treat headaches and other symptoms of migraines such as vomiting or sensitivity to light. However, it cannot be used as a preventive measure for a migraine attack.

Maxalt Melt is used to treat the symptoms of migraine such as headaches, vomiting or eye sensitivity to bright light. It is very useful when taken at the very beginning of the attack or its symptoms, but can be taken at any time during the attack.

Maxalt Melt affects a natural substance released in the brain known as serotonin. This substance constricts the blood vessels which have enlarged due to the attack. As a result, it provides relief during a severe headache and associated symptoms of a migraine attack.

Maxalt Melt helps treat the symptoms of a migraine attack and thus helps relieve a migraine sufferer. Prompt treatment at the start of the attack is known to be very effective in providing immediate relief.

Maxalt Melt is not a preventive measure for migraine attacks. Hence, it should not be taken to avoid pain. Rather, wait for the time when the pain starts developing right at the beginning of the attack and then administer this drug for its appropriate effect.

You should not take any other migraine drugs which are classified as ‘triptans’ along with this medicine.

It is important that follow the exact instructions as given by the doctor when taking Maxalt Melt

Follow these steps while taking the medicine:

  • Place one tablet from the packet on your tongue and allow it to dissolve with your saliva

  • Do not break or crush the tablet, take it whole.

  • Ensure that you handle the medicine with clean, dry hands without any moisture.

  • Open the outer pouch of the tablet or the bottle just before taking the medicine.

  • The tablets have a property of immediate dissolution, hence, they should be handled very carefully.

It is better to take the medicine on an empty stomach as it gets absorbed quickly and therefore works faster. However, if you have had a meal and then experience a migraine attack, you can still take this medicine.

For adults above the age of 18 years, the first dose of Maxalt Melt is 5 or 10mg, as recommended by the doctor. You may repeat the dose after 2 hours if the pain comes backHowever, the maximum dosage recommended for adults is 30mg in any 24 hours.
