When a person experiences a migraine attack, the excruciating headache is due to widening or swelling of the blood vessels that are present in the brain. Imigran works on the serotonin receptors in these blood vessels by narrowing them. Further, it inhibits the action of the trigeminal nerve. This relieves the headache and its associated symptoms such as feeling sick or sensitivity to sound or light. The medicine takes about half an hour to start showing its effect.
