Daktarin Oral Gel treats fungal infections and oral thrush with an active ingredient called miconazole. You can use it in your mouth, throat, gut, or stomach. The orange flavoured gel comes with a sugar-free formula that is suitable for children as young as four months old.

The 20mg of miconazole in each gram of Daktarin Oral Gel tackles and eliminates the fungi that cause the infections to clear it up as quickly as possible. It essentially creates an environment that makes it difficult for the fungi to grow and reproduce which, eventually rectifies the oral thrush, causing infection and your mouth becomes soothed and comfortable.

Since the gel has a sticky texture to help it stay in place, it might cause a choking hazard in children under the age of 4 months which is why they become unsuitable candidates for this medication. You should not apply this product to the back of the throat and make sure you are not allergic to any of the ingredients present in it, including the active ingredient miconazole. People who are suffering from persistent liver problems should also stay away from this medication.

It is crucial to wash your hands properly before applying the gel directly to the affected area. Use a clean finger to cover the infection in the mouth. If you wear dentures, you will have to remove them the night before and rub the gel over them too so that the disease does not spread on them.

The Daktarin Oral Gel works best and shows the most desired results when you use it right after your meals. Ideally, your doctor will recommend the dosage and application of the gel, however for a general guideline, you will use the gel four times a day after meals, and the suggested amount of the product is:

  • Children above two years old and adults should apply 2.5ml
  • Infants who are younger than two years old should apply 1.25ml
  • Adults and children over four months should use 20mg of the gel per kg of their body weight. They will have to divide this into four equal doses and apply it throughout the day. In any case, the maximum dosage of the gel should not exceed 10ml.

Ensure that you do not overdose on the recommended amount of the gel and continue using it for at least a week to see the desired results and till your infection subsides.

Exercising caution when using any medication is exceedingly crucial, especially when it gets in contact with the internal body. Similarly, there are certain precautions that you will have to undertake when using this oral gel. These include:

  • Carefully read the patient information leaflet before beginning with the treatment
  • Determine that you are not allergic to any of the ingredients
  • Avoid using it if you suffer from liver dysfunction
  • Consult a healthcare provider if you want to use it during pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Store in a dry place with lower temperature
  • Do not use the gel if it has expired

Daktarin Oral Gel, like all other medications, comes with its own set of possible side effects. Not everyone who uses it will experience any risks, but some of the commonly occurring side effects are:

  • A severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face, lips tongue, or throat, trouble swallowing, breathing, severe irritation, reddening, or blistering of the skin
