EllaOne is a morning-after pill that helps prevent unwanted pregnancy that may arise due to unprotected sex or failed contraceptive methods, such as splitting of the condom.

Unlike Levonelle which is effective for 72 hours after intercourse, EllaOne can help prevent up to 98% of unwanted pregnancies for 120 hours or 5 days after unprotected sex. However, it should be taken as soon as possible to give it the best chance of working.

EllaOne contains the hormone ulipristal acetate as its active ingredient. This stops the ovaries from ovulating temporarily and releasing an egg, the egg can therefore not get fertilised and thus prevents unwanted pregnancy.

Most women tend to get their period on time or within a week of the expected time after having taken EllaOne. However, if you do not get your period within this time, you should take a pregnancy test.

The morning-after pill may fail due to:

  • Timing of ovulation: If you have already ovulated during or after the time of sexual intercourse, but prior to taking the medicine it may not be effective.

  • Interactions with other drugs: some drugs may reduce the effectiveness of EllaOne if taken together.

EllaOne can help prevent unwanted pregnancy which may arise due to:

  • Unprotected sex

  • If your contraception method has failed, such as the condom has torn or if you may have taken your contraceptive pill late

EllaOne comes in a 30mg tablets, containing the active ingredient ulipristal acetate. You must take one tablet as soon as possible after unprotected sex to prevent unwanted pregnancy. If you are sick or have diarrhoeawithin 3 hours of taking the tablet you will need to take a second tablet as it may not have been absorbed.

Take one tablet as soon as possible after unprotected sex. At maximum, it should be taken within 5 days or 120 hours after. It may be taken either with or without food. The medicine can be taken at any time during the menstrual cycle when you think you are not already pregnant. If you have unprotected sex after taking the medicine, it will not prevent an unwanted pregnancy.

Women who have severe digestive problems, such as Crohn’s disease, should use this pill with caution as it may not get fully absorbed into your system. The tablet may be less effective in this instance.

EllaOne should not be used by:

  • Women who are or believe they are pregnant

  • Women with galactose intolerance, the Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption

  • Women with severe asthma that has been or is being treated with steroid tablets.

  • Women with severely decreased liver function.

  • Women who are allergic to any of the medicine’s ingredients

Common side effects of EllaOne include:

  • Nausea

  • Stomach pain

  • Headaches

  • Abdominal pain

  • Painful period

  • Tiredness

  • Delayed or early period
