Erectile dysfunction (ED) or impotence is diagnosed as an erection problem when man fails to produce or sustain an erection to engage in satisfactory sexual intercourse due to lack of blood flow to the penis. This condition can lead to certain concerns and complications, including:

  • An unsatisfactory sex life

  • Embarrassment or low self-esteem

  • Stress or anxiety

  • Relationship problems

  • The inability to get your partner pregnant

The causes of impotence or erectile dysfunction can be physicalpsychological, and related to lifestyle choices

Physical factors that can cause erectile dysfunction are:

  • Prostate or pelvic surgery

  • Hypothyroid or hyperthyroid

Psychological factors usually cause short-term erectile dysfunction and include:

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Relationship problems

  • Stress

  • Low self-esteem or low confidence

Lifestyle choices that can affect your sexual health include:

  • High alcohol intake

  • Smoking

  • Drug abuse

  • Tiredness

Erectile dysfunction symptoms include:

  • Not able to get an erection

  • Not able to sustain an erection

  • Reduced sexual desire

Impotence treatment involves targeting the underlying cause, whether physical, physiological or related to lifestyle choices. Your doctor or GP can help you figure out the best treatment option from the following:

b. Other Treatment Options

Vacuum Pumps

A vacuum erection pump or penis pump is one of the treatment options for mild ED. It is a clear tube connected to a pump, which can be battery or hand-operated. This tube fits over the penis and you pump out air from it creating a vacuum, which causes the blood to rush to the penis, triggering an erection.

The erection is locked by placing a rubber ring around the base of the penis. The erection stays for around 30 minutes.

Psychotherapy

If the cause of your ED is psychologicalyou may benefit from sensate focus exercises. If anxiety or depression is the cause of ED, you may have to consider therapy or counselling

Lifestyle Changes

Improving your lifestyle habits haa huge impact on your sexual health. If your ED is due to poor lifestyle choices, changing them may help fight the causes of erectile dysfunction

  • Eat a healthy well-balanced diet

  • Stop smoking

  • Reduce your alcohol intake

  • Exercise regularly

Surgery

Surgical procedures are generally recommended as the last resort when all the other ED treatment options fail or are not well tolerated. Surgery to treat erectile dysfunction include reconstruction of blood vessels or implants in the penis.

The side effects of ED medication may include the following:

  • Muscle aches

  • Headache

  • Diarrhoea

  • Heartburn

  • Visual changes

  • Long-lasting erection

  • Facial flushing

  • Hearing loss

  • Nasal congestion

Let your doctor know if you are having any of these side effects. If your erection doesn’t go away or you’re experiencing hearing or vision problems, contact your doctor immediately.

  1. How do erectile dysfunction drugs work?
The erectile dysfunction drugs, namely Levitra, Viagra, and Cialis, belong to a class of drugs called PDE5 inhibitors. They relax the tight blood vessels, allowing more blood to surge into the penis to cause an erection.

  2. Which ED medication is best for you?
All three ED drugs – Sildenafil, Tadalafil, and Vardenafil – are popular and scientifically proven to treat erectile dysfunction. You can expect good results regardless of which medication you use.

Although all erectile dysfunction drugs work in the same way, they have different properties. Different people may respond to each drug differently.

Generally, the key difference between these ED medications is the average amount of time the effect of these medications last. Refer to the table above to see the treatment comparison.

However, the best erectile dysfunction drug depends on your needs. If cost is the deciding factor, Sildenafil and Tadalafil are the cheapest. These ingredients are found in widely used drugs,?such as Viagra and Cialis. You can talk to the pharmacist for our online pharmacy for more details on the side effects and your needs.

  3. Can you get erectile dysfunction treatment over the counter?
Yes, you can now order erectile dysfunction medicines over the counter without seeing the doctor. However, you are required to go through an assessment with the pharmacist to check your eligibility.  ED medicines are easily available online on MedsNow and you can consult our pharmacist at your convenience as well.

  4. What vitamins are good for erectile dysfunction?
There is no evidence of how beneficial vitamins are for erectile dysfunction, but  the following vitamins can help:

Vitamin C - improves blood flow
Vitamin E - improves the production of testosterone
    B-Complex - increases blood flow

  5. Can you get treatment on the NHS? Yes.
When you go to the NHS to treat your erectile dysfunction (ED), a doctor or nurse will ask questions about your lifestyle, relationships, and your specific problems. A few basic health checks will be conducted, including a physical exam and blood pressure. Depending on the symptoms, a few extra tests may be recommended.

Once the doctor diagnoses the cause of your ED issue, depending on the NHS recommendations, treatment will be prescribed, which can be any of the following:

    ED medications
    Lifestyle changes
    Counselling
    Vacuum pumps
    Surgery

Note: NHS has relaxed its restrictions for sildenafil (generic Viagra), but the treatment may be rationed. Read more about the treatment options here.

  6. Are there any natural remedies for erectile dysfunction?
Medical treatments are known to be the most effective methods to treat erectile dysfunction. However, if you don’t want to involve medications, you can try the following natural remedies to  treat erectile dysfunction:

Try erectile dysfunction exercises that make the muscles around the penis stronger for improved blood flow and erections.
Improve your lifestyle habits – eat right, exercise regularly, quit smoking, reduce alcohol intake, etc.
There are herbal products sold in the market that claim to treat erectile dysfunction. Unfortunately, there is no evidence that proves that they work.

  7. Do erectile dysfunction exercises help?
Erectile dysfunction (ED) exercises are known to make the muscles around the penis stronger. Pelvic floor exercises, including Kegel exercises, are known to help 40% to 50% of men improve their erections.

  8. Is ED a natural part of the ageing process?
Conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, and high cholesterol are common in older people. All these conditions are potential causes of erectile dysfunction. Hence, ED is more common in men age 40 and above.

  9. Can being tired cause erectile dysfunction?
Yes. It can be a potential cause. When you are tired, your libido and your ability to get or sustain an erection are affected.

  10. Can too much masturbation cause erectile dysfunction?
Yes. If you masturbate multiple times within a short period, you can develop erection issues.

  11. Can alcohol and drugs cause erectile dysfunction?
Yes. Too much alcohol and drug consumption increase your chances of developing erectile dysfunction.

  12. How can I overcome erectile dysfunction?
After the cause of erectile dysfunction is identified, treatment can be administered to overcome erectile dysfunction. If the cause is psychological or related to lifestyle choices, it can be treated without erectile dysfunction medications. However, if the reason for ED is physical or because of an underlying disease, then it has to be treated with prescription medications such as Viagra or Cialis. Read more about ED treatment options here.

  13. Can a lot of cycling cause erectile dysfunction?
Yes. Excessive cycling can put pressure on the testicles and the nerves at the base of the penis, causing erectile dysfunction.

  14. I have ED. Can it be reversed, or is it forever?
It depends on the cause of erectile dysfunction. If it is due to your lifestyle and stress, it can be resolved. If it is due to sexual performance anxiety, it can be treated with counselling or ED medications, such as sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis), vardenafil (Levitra) and spedra (avanafil). It is important to treat the cause of erectile dysfunction.  If erectile dysfunction is due to an underlying medical condition such as diabetes, and blood pressure, that condition has to be treated first. In most cases, treating the medical cause of ED may resolve the problem.  ED medications are treatment, not a cure. However, they can be used for the long-term.

  15. I’m embarrassed to see my GP. Do I have to visit my GP?
Yes. Erectile dysfunction can be due to preventable and treatable medical conditions. Your GP will examine you, ask you questions, and order a few blood tests to find the root cause of the problem. If your ED has an underlying medical condition, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or cardiovascular disease, untreated ED may worsen the condition and predispose you to other serious problems such as stroke and heart attack.

However, if you are embarrassed about talking about your erection problems face-to-face with your GP, you can consult an online doctor and order the ED medications online too.

  16. How can I improve the ED without taking any medicines?
You can make a few lifestyle changes to improve your erectile function. Eat a healthy diet, stop smoking, maintain a healthy weight, avoid drinking too much alcohol, and exercise regularly. If erectile dysfunction is due to stress, anxiety about sexual performance, or depression, counselling can be effective.

  17. Do erectile dysfunction tablets always work?
These tablets are known to work in around 75% of men. However, if the circulation to the penis is very poor or the nerve supply to the penis is damaged, these medications may not work.  Men with low testosterone levels may be resistant to the treatment. Men with poor response to the medication or worsening of the ED condition should consult the doctor.

  18. I want to start a family, but I have erectile dysfunction. What can I do?
You can take ED medicines like sildenafil (Viagra), vardenafil (Levitra), tadalafil (Cialis), or avanafil (Spedra) to improve your erectile function. Studies have shown that these medications do not have any adverse effects on sperm or testicular function.

  19. Is it safe to buy erectile dysfunction medicines online?
Yes, it is legal and safe to order erectile dysfunction medicines online in the UK. At MedsNow, before you buy medicines for erectile dysfunction, you will have to undergo an online consultation with our doctor. The doctor will issue an online prescription after accessing your eligibility through an electronic medical questionnaire.

You will need to provide information about your overall health and the medications you are currently using. The purpose of it is to assess whether or not the ED treatment is suitable for you. Once your suitability is confirmed, you can order ED medicine
